5 Questions Every Researcher Should Ask a Chemical Supplier Before a Bulk Order
Choosing a chemical supplier is one of the most important decisions a researcher makes. The right supplier provides consistent, verifiable materials that support good science. The wrong supplier introduces variables that can compromise months of work.
At Axion Chemicals, we talk to researchers and procurement teams every day who are looking for pure, reliable compounds. Here are the five questions I recommend every researcher ask before placing a bulk order.
1. Can you provide batch-specific Certificates of Analysis?
A Certificate of Analysis (CoA) should be batch-specific, not a generic "typical analysis" sheet. A proper CoA includes a batch number matching your order, the purity percentage with test method (HPLC, GC, titration), a list of impurities tested for (residual solvents, heavy metals), the date of analysis, and an authorized signature or stamp. If a supplier cannot provide this before you order, it's a red flag.
2. What impurities do you test for?
Purity percentage alone tells you nothing about the remaining percentage. A compound labeled "98% pure" could have 2% unknown contaminants. A good vendor will list residual solvents, heavy metals, and process-related impurities. A bad vendor will deflect or provide no answer.
3. Is your supply chain transparent?
Supply chain transparency means you know where raw materials came from, how the compound was synthesized, and who handled it. This matters for reproducibility, safety, and regulatory compliance. A transparent supplier answers these questions without hesitation.
4. How is the product packaged and stored?
High-purity compounds degrade in heat, light, moisture, or air. Ask about packaging protocols. A reliable supplier uses vacuum-sealed containers, includes desiccants, uses light-protective packaging when needed, and maintains temperature control for sensitive compounds. If a supplier can't describe their packaging protocol, keep looking.
5. Can you provide verifiable references?
A supplier who has worked with research institutions or industrial buyers should provide references. Contact those references and ask: Did the product match the CoA? Was packaging intact? How were issues handled? Would you order from them again? If a vendor has no references or refuses to provide them, move on.

The bottom line
Legitimate vendors are transparent. They share CoAs before payment. They answer technical questions about impurities and packaging. They provide references. If a vendor is vague, secretive, or unable to answer basic quality questions, the time spent vetting a supplier is never wasted.
